SUGARLOAF by Alex Chen I went with the idea of having fun and to familiarize ourselves with class 3~4 sections. This was a hike I was going to love because I like the challenge of class 4 climbs. We were at Mt. Baldy Ice House trailhead at dawn. This was by far the shortest and easiest hike we were doing because we will be heading to Mt Whitney in a week. We headed up the canyon kicking small rocks loose and touching the large bushes. We soon found out that the bushes were poisonous, so some of us had to apply Jack’s ointment. There were a few nice climbs and scrambles on rock that we tried for fun. I was so eager to get into them that I went first on all of them. After climbing up, I sat down to munch on my snacks. When I moved, I found that my pack and my pants were stained with tree sap. Half an hour later, I realized I had dropped my retainer so Quang and I headed back to find it. Luckily it was recovered. Climbing back up again was not as fun as the first time; but we ran up to catch up with the rest. The peak was easy to find. After a big lunch, we headed back. Since everyone was moving slowly, I found a nice rock shaped like a recliner and took a nice nap. When I woke up, everyone had already passed me and was almost out of my sight. I ran down and caught up with the rest under a small tree. Only one person was able to get through its path. Suddenly, I heard Frank cursing, then Belle screamed, and I was stung on my back. I had nowhere to go until Frank and Belle got out of the path. I then saw a few dozen wasps attacking me, so I dropped to the floor and started swatting them. Jack screamed, “run!” And everyone ran down the slope as fast as he/she could. Again, we used ointment from Jack’s first aid kit. Fortunately, none of us had allergic reactions. We’ll be back with more ointment. See Sugarloaf Photos Read about other hikes: Strawberry Pk Clamshell Pk Cactus to Tram Sugarloaf Mt. Whitney MR Mt. Russell Cactus to Clouds Iron to Baldy |
